Unhappy Meal

Acrylic on cloth canvas

2022

Unhappy Meal revisits the image of the hamburger as a global icon. Based on the idea of the “burger index”, which measures the relative purchasing power of a Big Mac in different countries, the work highlights global inequalities: who can afford what, and at what price. Of the 160 lines that make up the piece, two grey lines visually embody the percentage of the population that holds roughly half of the world's wealth. Where the other lines are coloured, these two dark lines are a reminder that the distribution of resources is neither uniform nor equitable. Unhappy Meal is an image of the world as it is: a universal meal, but a bill that is not.
